报告摘要:

Confined ultrafast laser interactions driven with controlled beam shapesare a major opportunity today for internal 3D nano-structuring of transparentmaterials and film with tailoredoptical and mesoscopic properties. This presentation examines the fundamental beampropagation and interaction physics for generating long narrow filament tracksthrough to creating thin intra-film cleaving planes. A spatial light modulator(SLM) has been applied toward enhancing and inhibiting of femtosecond nonlinear interactionsfor elongating filaments, lowering optical waveguide loss, and acceleratingetching rate of nanograting tracks over a range of shallow to deep processingdepths in fused silica.Such lasernano-processing offers 3D Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing of fibercladding photonics and lab-in-fibre devices not previously conceivable.Alternatively, thin-film interference hasbeen applied to selectivelyopen film into nano-thin glass bubbles, vertical skirts, or inter-nested layers of nano-cavity structure. The potential for developing lab-in-film concepts, compatible with CMOStechnologies in SiOx-coated silicon, are discussed towardsapplications in sub-cellular and DNA studies.

报告人简介:

Peter R. Herman earned MASc (1982) and PhD (1986) degrees studying lasers and diatomicspectroscopy in the Physics Department at the University of Toronto andfollowed with a post-doctoral position at the Institute of Laser Engineering inOsaka University, Japan (1987) to the study of laser-plasma physics and x-raylasers. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at theUniversity of Toronto in 1988 where he holds a full professor position. Hedirects a large and collaborative research group that develops and applieslaser technology and advanced beam delivery systems to control and harvestlaser interactions in new frontiers of 3-D nanofabrication. Our mantra is: “We begin with light and weend with light devices.” Professor Herman is OSA, SPIE and IAPLE fellow, holdsseveral patents, spun out one company (FiLaser), and has published over 300papers in journals and conference proceedings.http://photonics.light.utoronto.ca/laserphotonics/
